Chapter Fifteen

True to his word, Alex made sure not to let Rafe rest much that evening. After their second round of heart thumping, world rocking sex, Rafe lay flat on his back, with his eyes closed and a smile plastered on his face.

“I surrender. Whatever you want, all my worldly goods are yours. Give me a white flag.” He shifted then groaned, flopping back against the pillows. “Don’t make me move though.” His eyelids fluttered then rested still. “God.”

It took a moment for Alex to catch his own breath. “You called?” He propped himself up on his elbow and brushed a kiss over Rafe’s lips.

“Very funny.” Finally opening his eyes, Rafe blinked then squinted up at him. “Where did you put my glasses?”

“I’m keeping them hostage, to make sure you don’t run away from me until I’m ready to let you go.”

Rafe reached out and brushed his fingers along Alex’s jaw. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Their eyes held. Alex’s heart gave a funny bounce and he found it hard to breathe again. Unwilling to let the mood turn serious, Alex forced himself to grin and get out of bed. “Well, we have to eat. I’m all for ordering takeout and spending the rest of our night here in bed.”

He grabbed his iPad and Rafe’s glasses and brought both back to the bed. Rafe sat up, his eyes dark and wistful.

“Are you asking me to stay?”

Alex stared at him, gape-mouthed. “Do I honestly need to? I thought it was a given. Besides,” he joked, “I always buy my dates at least a dinner.”

Rafe froze then turned away, but not before Alex caught the flash of hurt in his soft eyes.

Fuck. “I didn’t—”

“It’s fine, Alex. You don’t owe me any explanations.” Rafe slipped out of bed and Alex couldn’t stop staring at his long, perfect body with that beautiful ass he was beginning to crave. No fucking way. He’d already screwed things up with Micah, he wasn’t about to let this friendship crash and burn before it barely got off the ground.

“No. Please.” He raced around to Rafe’s side of the bed and pushed him back down, sitting next to him. “Listen to me. I was kidding. You know me, I’m always joking. It’s how I deal with all the shit in my life. But I don’t want you to think you’re not special.”

Rafe said nothing, only the hurt in his eyes told Alex he wasn’t buying what Alex was saying.

Frustrated, Alex scrubbed his face with his hands. “I’m not used to this, this friends and lovers thing. I joke around so I don’t have to think about things too hard. I’ve never had a relationship before.”

“So why me?” Always honest himself, Rafe deserved answers.

“I don’t know,” said Alex, helplessly. “You—you’re different.”

And Rafe was. Looking into Rafe’s open face, Alex could see a history behind those eyes that spoke of past hurts and shame. Rafe had only briefly talked about his past, in bits and pieces, but Alex knew there was a wealth of stories he’d yet to share.
